SUPERBOWL'S 25th ANNIVERSARY

On Saturday, 24 October, a glorious sunny day, Superbowl celebrated the 25th. Anniversary of the Club. What a day to remember for everyone!
The Club, under the Ownership of Don & Pat Fisher, has enjoyed considerable success during its history and several of their Guests, together with Members past and present, celebrated the occasion. The Dress Code for the day was Silver and White and everyone joined in the spirit which was a fun filled celebration.

A maximum Guest List of 64 participated in a specially adapted “Fours” Tournament where each player was categorised as a Lead, No.2, No.3 or Skip. There were four games of 8 ends and each Skip drew for their Rink, and Team Members, prior to the start of each game.
The objective was to identify the most successful Player in each of the four positions and, with all of the Teams extremely well balanced and competitive, there were some excellent games. Don decided not to divulge a Player’s placing at any stage and this added to the fun and excitement when the final placings were announced.

Competition to identify the most successful Lead was tight with three Players unbeaten. It was the number of “ends won” which gave May Callan the first prize.

John Morgan, who was awarded the Trophy for the Club’s most improved Male Bowler in 2008/09, was the only undefeated No.2 Player. He was closely followed by James Forbes, a newcomer to the Sport, who joined the Club in February. James won three and drew one of his games, an excellent performance.

It was an extremely close contest in the section to identify the most consistent No.3. There were two unbeaten Players and, as with the Leads, it was “ends won” which edged Margaret Stokes into first place at the expense of Mike Glithero.

A number of Skips only lost one once and Davie Hunter must have fancied his chances with 21 ends won. Gordon Kain, another Member who joined in February, emerged as the winner following a titanic struggle in his last game which he won 6-5.

Don & Pat presented commemorative Crystal Ware to each of the Winners with the Club providing Wine to Manuel and Mike as a gesture of their “near miss”.

Murray Johns prepared a Quiz covering World Events from 1984-2009 and Bottle prizes were awarded for this, the “3 best dressed”, and the Bowlers who had the first “toucher” in each session following the ringing of the Bell. Winners were :-

Best Dressed            - Chris Blackburn, Jan Brown & Eleanor Morgan

Toucher Winners       - Jim Callan, Margaret Kain, Simone Morgan & Denis Tolfree

Quiz Winners :-

1st        : Mary Detheridge & Angie Knight

2nd       : Eleanor Morgan, Simone Morgan & Alan Turner

3rd        : Jane, Joyce & Nicky ( the “Silver Girls” from the Bar )

A very successful Raffle was co-ordinated by Marjorie Johns and Sandra Lewis. The Club is extremely grateful to the many Members who donated Prizes and to David Pittel, and his company Bwin, for donating Tickets for the Malaga v Real Madrid Football Match in May and to Simone Morgan and Ilona Ott for donating several Golf items, a Round of Golf and a Golf Lesson at Magna Golf Club in Marbella. Simone and Ilona are in the area for the next 5 months and, should anyone be interested in Coaching, they can be contacted on 617 26 24 77.

The Club’s Captain, Craig Lewis expressed his thanks to Don & Pat for creating a Club which offered everyone a friendly welcome, competitive Bowling if you wanted it, in a relaxed and informal environment.

It is coincidental that, on the week of this very special occasion, Don & Pat have sold the Club. The new Owners, Martin Randerson and Jamie Ali, could not participate in the Bowling due to other Business commitments but it was fitting that Jamie could attend the final presentations and share in the festivities which went on long into the evening.
