Murray Johns ( Competition Secretary ).
Superbowl’s Membership remains consistent throughout the year which
means the Club can play its internal Competitions after the Winter
Season has been completed. This allows Members to participate fully
in the Bowling Calendar organized by the Owners’ Committee, and
individual Clubs, which runs from October to mid-April.
There have been many upsets in Tournaments throughout the Winter
Season and this one was no exception with many of the “fancied”
Singles players and drawn teams falling by the wayside in early
rounds.
The Ladies and Gents Singles Champions had been identified
previously to enable them to compete in the annual Champion of
Champions event. These had been won by Angie Knight and Davie
Hunter.
In addition, Superbowl has two other Singles events, the Premier and
Handicap, where Ladies and Gents compete together. The Drawn Pairs
and Triples make up the Club’s Championship events and this year’s
entry was significantly up on 2008.
PREMIER SINGLES :-
Mary Detheridge eliminated Terry Barrett and Alan Turner, two of the
favourites, in the early rounds and Stephen Field accounted for Jan
Brown before both fell to the ever improving Paul Brown. In the
other half of the Draw, Ronny Lamb and Angie Knight emerged as
Semi-final opponents with Ronny holding the upper hand at 17-8.
Angie then took the next 7 ends to emerge the winner at 21-17 and
set up an intriguing Final with Paul Brown.
For 12 ends the Final was extremely close but a 4 on the 13th end
effectively ended Angie’s challenge and Paul pulled away to secure
the title for the second time in three years with a 21-12 win.
HANDICAP SINGLES :-
Since 2000 this event has been dominated by Pat Fisher and Andy
Salmon, 2003 and 2005 being the only years they’ve missed out. Andy
featured heavily again this year and, having battled back from a
20-8 deficit to defeat Terry Barrett, could not repeat the
performance against Michael Detheridge. He lost an epic Semi-final
encounter
21-18 whilst Mike Glithero defeated Manuel Bautista 21-13 in the
other semi-final.
This Final was certainly one to remember. Mike was bowling superbly
to a short Jack and Michael looked “dead and buried” at 16-4 down
after 13 ends. He then took 7 of the next 8 ends to establish a
20-17 lead only to drop a 4 on the last end.
The Handicap Committee did an effective job as, at the Quarter Final
stage, 50% of matches played were decided within 3 shots and three
of the Quarter Finals finished with 21-20 score lines.
DRAWN PAIRS :-
Two extremely strong pairings emerged from the Draw and it was no
surprise when Pat Fisher & Andy Salmon progressed to the Final.
However, they did have a close shave in the Quarter Final when they
beat Paul Brown & Anthony Rose 17-16. The Semi-final was less
stressful and they beat Mary Detheridge & Jan Brown 22-9.
Terry Barrett & Manuel Bautista was the other fancied pairing but
they surprisingly lost to Bill Davey & Russell Borley who both had
an excellent Tournament. Sadly they couldn’t maintain their momentum
and they lost their Semi-final 21-9 to Davie Hunter & Monni
Augustine.
Despite stubborn resistance from Davie & Monni, the Final was
dominated by Pat & Andy and they emerged comfortable 20-12 winners.
DRAWN TRIPLES :-
The most experienced Team was that of Davie Hunter, Paul & Jan Brown
but they were eliminated in the Quarter Final losing to Pat Fisher,
Maureen Hancox & Manuel Bautista. They were subsequently out bowled
in the Semi-final losing 18-7 to Craig Lewis, Chris Blackburn & Andy
Salmon.
Shirley Owen, John Cornwell & Joan Whitton comfortably won through
in the other half of the Draw and we had a very entertaining Final.
Shirley’s Team dominated the early exchanges and lead 10-7 after 10
ends but two counts of 4 within 3 ends swung the match to give
Craig, Chris & Andy a 21-15 victory and the Triples’ title. |
