Mijas BC Triumph at the President’s Fours Finals
This year’s President’s Fours Finals, sponsored by the Costa del Sol
Bowls Committee and held at Santa Maria BC on 25th February, saw the
increasing emergence of Mijas BC as a force to be reckoned with.
With the recent injection of a number of competitive bowers, the
club currently lies second in the Costa del Sol Tigers league table
and fielded the most winners and finalists in the Malaga Cup.
At the start of the semi-finals, most bookies would have given the
Mijas four the longest odds against winning the tournament,
considering the strength and experience of the two Superbowl teams
and that of Benalmadena. Admittedly, their semi-final against Terry
Barrett’s Superbowl four went to an extra end. Andy Salmon’s match
against Brian Todd’s Benalmadena four was also a cliff-hanger, with
Andy taking the honours for Superbowl.
So it was Tony & Val Thornton coupled with Brian & Pam Attwood,
Mijas BC, matched against Andy Salmon, Mike Glithero, Murray Johns
and Gillian Goodwin, Superbowl BC in the final. Even at this stage,
neutral spectators would have probably fancied the Superbowl team.
However, Mijas confounded the form book by dominating the match from
the early stages, winning the final by 23-12.
At the presentation, Jimmy Chalmers, representing the sponsors,
presented prizes and trophies to the worthy winners and finalists,
watched by a knowledgeable group of spectators, including Don
Fisher, who originally introduced this long running and very popular
tournament.
