ST. GEORGE’S DAY CELEBRATION A REAL TRIUMPH FOR SUPERBOWL’S GENTS

Report & photos Murray Johns ( Competition Secretary ).

In the UK, St. George is possibly the least celebrated of the “Patron Saints” but Superbowl chose to honour England’s Saint with a special Ladies v Gents “Challenge Match”. It was an extremely colourful occasion, played in glorious sunshine and the afternoon concluded with a mouth-watering BBQ.

The two Captains, Pat Fisher and John Cornwell, both fielded their strongest Teams possible to ensure a very competitive encounter. Pat did get one concession from her opposite number when John agreed to a “3 point penalty” for any “burned end”. Many of the Gents had to curb their aggressive instincts on several occasions!

Seven Triples took to the Green to play a normal 18 end game with the Team having the highest cumulative shots total over the seven Rinks being the outright Winner.

Early on, the Ladies dominated on four of the Rinks and spirits were high. Gradually the Gents established a stranglehold and ultimately there were convincing wins for :-

Terry Barrett, John Cornwell & Wally Shufflebottom
Denis Tolfree, Mike Glithero & Alan Turner
Peter Stokes, John Blackburn & Bill Davey
Ronny Lamb, Manuel Bautista & John Morgan

The result on the remaining three Rinks was in doubt until the last end. Mary Detheridge, Harriett Foxwell & Doreen Land came from 12-4 down to lead 14-12 on the 15th end against Geoff Land, Murray Johns & Russell Borley. Unfortunately they dropped 7 shots on the last three ends to lose a very closely contested game-

The Ladies did cause a major upset on the other two Rinks which were close run throughout. Margaret Stokes, Sue Gerrard & Doreen Davey defeated Joe Ashbridge, Jim Callan & Brian Judge 16-14 and Marjorie Johns, Chris Blackburn and Irene Bhreatnach held on to beat John Owen, David Pittel & Anthony Rose 14-13.

So, having comfortably defeated the Ladies 146-80 on this occasion, the Gents have the “bragging rights” until the next time when the outcome could be so different!

Prizes were presented to the Ladies and Gents winners with the highest aggregate age, the honours going to the Teams “skipped” by Margaret Stokes and Geoff Land. Marjorie’s Triple also won a prize for the closest winning Rink and “booby prizes”
went to Joan Whitton, Maureen Hancox & Jacqui Knapp for the heaviest losing Rink.
