Thrilling Climax!
This extremely popular Triples Tournament was generously sponsored
for the first time by Banco Halifax Hispańa and, in the present
economic climate, the Club is extremely grateful for their generous
contribution.
As always the event was well supported and Bowlers from 5 Clubs
participated to ensure two days of very competitive Bowling where a
high standard was maintained throughout. Entries were drawn into two
sections with each Triple playing 9 games of 6 ends comprising 3 x
Triples, 3 x Pairs and 3 x Singles, each member of a Team playing
the 3 x Triples, 2 x Pairs and 1 x Singles.
The winners of each section came through to play the Final but, as
one would expect from a quality entry, the Groups were closely
contested. In Group A, two Teams tied with 14 points but Paul Brown,
Brian Todd & Alan Turner edged out David Jones, Maureen Hancox &
Denis Tolfree as they scored three shots more over their 9 games.
In Group B, Terry Barrett, Manuel Bautista & Jon Jon Cornwell were
clear winners on 16 points with the Triples of Malcolm Greenwood,
Barry & Wendy Pemberton and Pat Fisher, Davie Hunter & Angie Knight
finishing 3 points adrift.
This set up a thrilling Final with each Triple splitting their Team
to play a Singles game over 10 ends and a Pairs game over 6 ends. To
add to the tension both games were played simultaneously and a large
crowd gathered for the Final thus generating a tremendous
atmosphere.
Manuel was nominated to play the Singles against Paul who had just
returned from a successful Training Session with the Spanish
National Squad and was “odds on” favourite to win. However it was
Manuel who took the early initiative to lead 5-1 and, having two
counts of 4 in the first 6 ends to establish a 10-3 lead, Paul never
had time to recover and lost 11-6.
Playing with Paul was the very successful Benalmadena pairing of
Brian Todd & Alan Turner. They had enjoyed considerable success in
the recent Malaga Cup and, as with Paul, must have started as
favourites to beat Terry & Superbowl’s Captain.
Terry & Jon Jon lost the first end but they must have been buoyed by
Manuel’s performance on the adjacent Rink for they won the next 4
ends, including a 4 and a 3, to establish an unassailable 9-2 lead.
With the last end an academic exercise Brian & Alan took 2 shots to
give the scoreline a more respectable look.
Superbowl’s Club President, David Jones, headed the Presentation
Party and gave a vote of thanks all Players, to Jane, Mark and all
the Staff at the Club, to Davie Hunter for the excellent
organisation and to the Halifax who, in addition to sponsoring the
Prizes for the Winners and losing Finalists, also kindly sponsored a
quality Prize Draw. The Winners were :-
1st : Doreen Musgrove 2nd : Marjorie Johns 3rd : Andy Salmon
All Prizes were presented, on behalf of the Halifax by Snr. Salvador
Alba Fernandez.
To conclude the Presentation there was a special vote of thanks to
Doreen Musgrove who, having just returned from the UK, donated her
time to Umpire on both days of the Tournament and the Club made a
special presentation to her. |
